Resume Tips for the Professional

Building your LinkedIn profile is just as important as your traditional resume.
  • Include an updated, polished, professionally taken profile picture.
  • Make sure that your photo has a solid background and is not a cropped out picture of you from a group picture with your colleagues.
  • Investing your time, energy, and sometimes your wallet towards a professional headshot relays the message that you are serious about your career.
  • List 3-5 bullet points of your experience and keep it simple. After all, your LinkedIn is not your resume, but a social networking site.
  • Include influential companies that you follow and your volunteer experience.
These can convey the message that you are passionate about your community and are plugged into the world.
  • LinkedIn profile links are appropriate to add to a resume within the section of your address and contact information.
Keep in mind that LinkedIn is not Facebook and should only be used for professional networking purposes.

Cover letters are a good resource to have “just in case”.
  • Rather than summing up your work experience, convince the manager why they should hire you and what you have to offer.
  • Including things in your cover letter that are not included in your resume can allow your profile to stand out to a potential employer.
Bullet points are key.
  • Keep the bullets at about a 5-7 bullet minimum so as not to crowd the resume.
  • Make sure to include the most important parts of your responsibilities.
As your responsibilities change, remember to update your resume.
